Biodiversity protection

“Making nature healthy again is key to our physical and mental wellbeing and is an ally in the fight against climate change and disease outbreaks. It is at the heart of our growth strategy, the European Green Deal, and is part of a European recovery that gives more back to the planet than it takes away...”

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, 2020

2030 The EU Biodiversity Strategy states that the protection and restoration of wetlands and peatlands are specific tools to address biodiversity, climate and human crises.

Restoration of peatland ecosystems

Ecological restoration is the process of restoring ecosystems that have been transformed, damaged, degraded or destroyed by direct or indirect human activities. An ecosystem is considered to be restored when it can function independently without additional human support.

The restoration of damaged peatlands is a part of the European Green Deal policy and The EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030.

Climate change

The sustainable use of wetlands and peatlands can significantly contribute to Lithuania's international commitments to reduce GHG emissions. This would be an effective contribution to climate change mitigation. Peatlands that are not damaged by drainage are natural ecosystems that efficiently absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reliably store it in organic carbon storages - peat.

Agriculture and paludiculture

Žemės ūkis ir pelkininkystė

In Lithuania, more than half of drained peat soils are used for agricultural purposes. About 7-8 million tons are emitted from these areas into the atmosphere. CO2 eq./year, ie almost half of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions. In order to reduce agricultural GHG emissions from agricultural peatlands, an alternative is paludiculture (Paludiculture). These are climate-friendly economic use of natural and restored wetlands, including preparation of local wetland plant production, maintenance and / or restoration of the hydrological regime typical of natural wetland habitats, promotion of peatland, protection of wetland biodiversity to ensure ecological stability of wetlands. The sustainable use of wetlands based on the principles of wetland management would not only achieve the goals of climate change mitigation, but also provide prospects for the improvement of the condition of valuable habitats.

Public education

Visuomenės švietimas

We invite all groups of society to take a closer look to peatlans and other ecosystems, their secrets and importance. We organize conferences, workshops, thematic trips to wetlands and other ecosystems and visits to schools. We are also publishing educational and informational publications.
