Restoration of wetland ecosystems

"Ecological restoration" means the process of restoring ecosystems that have been transformed, damaged, degraded or destroyed, directly or indirectly, by human activities in order to restore their natural, self-sustaining and  disturbance-resistant ecosystems.

An ecosystem is considered to be restored when combinations of species and a typical community structure characteristic of the reference ecosystem are formed and can function independently without additional human support. 

Restoration of drained and otherwise damaged wetlands is part of European Green Course policy, and ecological restoration activities are provided for in national legislation to meet the objectives of biodiversity and climate change policies.
